I recently had the opportunity to crochet a baby blanket for my stepdaughter. I thought this was the best opportunity to try out the 12-point star crochet pattern and it ended up being a surprisingly cute crochet baby blanket! I enjoyed the mindlessness of the repeat pattern as well as the uniqueness of the pattern as a baby blanket. Everyone who has seen the baby blanket all say how amazing it is!
What is the 12-point star crochet blanket?
The 12-point star is exactly what it sounds like. It is star shaped crochet pattern with 12 points, and it is worked in the round. Once you set up the beginning few rounds, this pattern is a repeatable pattern. Another popular repeatable crochet pattern is the virus blanket!

Getting Started
The first 4 rounds get the repeat pattern set up. Turning chains count as stiches.
Round 1 – start with a magic circle with 12 double crochet stitches. join. Chain 3, turn. 12
Round 2 – work 2 double crochet in each of the 12 stitches from the first round. join. Chain 3, turn. 24
Round 3 – Work (dc, ch 1, dc) into every other stitch. (This will give you 12 “V”). Join. Chain 3, turn. 36
Round 4 – Inside each of the “V” you will crochet (2 dc, ch 1, 2dc). Join. Chain 3, turn. 48
The Repeating Pattern
Starting with round 5 you will be working the same “pattern” for every row forward. The number of stitches will increase each round. You will use the “V” as your guide for stitch placements. No counting is actually required once you figure out the pattern.
Round 5 – You will dc in the last stitch before the “V” space – (2 dc, ch 2, 2dc) inside the “V” and dc in each stitch until the one before the “V” space.

If you look at the photo above, you will see the progression of the pattern. The first row of “V’s” has one stitch. The second row of “V’s” has 2 stitches, the 3rd row has 3 stitches between the opening, and so on and so forth. This is the pattern that you repeat until you reach your desired blanket size.
I went a long time with the plain blue, then I did 2 rows of a variegated yarn just to add a pop of color, and then went back to the blue for a couple more rows.

Conclusion
Don’t ever feel like you have to take the “standard” approach when crocheting an item. Anything you put love into will come out amazing!
