What is a hacky sack?
Google says, “A hacky sack (generically known as a footbag) is a small, round bag filled with plastic pellets, sand, or beads that players keep in the air using their feet and body. It refers both to the object itself and the popular, informal game played with it.”
Hacky sack was originally invented in 1972 as a therapy tool. The, later in 80’s and 90’s that it originally rose to fame as a game. Now, in 2026 they have resurfaced and become popular with teenagers.
How do I make a hacky sack?
Crochet hacky sacks are made by crocheting a round ball and filling with some sort of pellet. I make mine with poly beads used in doll making. I put those beads inside a balloon and the balloon inside the crochet ball.

What material should I use for my crochet hacky sack?
Typically you would want to use cotton for durability purposes, but acrylic will work just fine.
What side should my hacky sack be?
A hacky sack should be around 3 inches in diameter and weigh between 30 and 50 grams. The more experienced players prefer the lighter hacky sacks and beginners will prefer the heavier.
