What is the best crochet stitch for a baby blanket? I just had grandbaby number 2, so let’s talk about crochet stitches and which ones work best for baby blankets!
When learning to crochet the thought of what to crochet can be so overwhelming. Not just that, but then there is the choice of what stitch, out of the gazillions to choose from, to use for your project. Let’s narrow some of these choices down just a little bit, shall we? If you are reading this your next project is likely a baby blanket and you have probably moved on to which crochet stitch should you use.
I was excited to crochet a baby blanket for my first grandbaby, a girl, a couple years back, so I am equally thrilled I got to do it again this year. This year, though, it was for a baby boy. Knowing this, a friend of mine recently gifted me some new yarn.
What is the best crochet stitch for a baby blanket?
Too many times I see people ask that question. Or they will ask what color? What size? What yarn? There is no right or wrong answer to any of these questions.
The best crochet stitch for a baby blanket is an impossible question to answer. Even if I did have an answer, it doesn’t mean it’s a stitch you know or a stitch you like. The best crochet stitch for a baby blanket is the crochet stitch you choose to use for the crochet baby blanket you are crocheting. Even better, a crochet stitch that you are capable of crocheting!
Crochet what is on your heart.
I recently crocheted the blanket pictured below for my grandson who just arrived. Is it what he or his mother wanted? I don’t know. But what I do know is that the yarn I used was super soft and the crochet stitch I used, the half double crochet, is my favorite crochet stitch. I know that I enjoyed every minute I spent crocheting it and I believe that is probably one of the most important parts of crocheting.

If stitch suggestions are what you are after, then I will give you a couple of popular ideas. Being that this blog is geared towards crochet beginners, all of these suggestions will be beginner friendly.

What is the easiest baby blanket to crochet?
What is the easiest blanket to crochet is right up there with what is the best crochet stitch for a baby blanket. The easiest baby blanket to crochet for me is something that I can mindlessly crochet. That might not be what you are looking to crochet. The question you should be asking yourself is, “what baby blanket is it that I want to crochet?”
Are you looking to crochet something small like a “lovey” or a stroller blanket? Or perhaps you are looking to create something extravagant. No one can actually tell you what you are looking to create, only you know that.
Then of course, there is also the factor of time. Crocheting is not exactly a speedy process. Some of us have entire pregnancies to crochet blankets, others need quick gifts on a whim. If you are looking for the quickest crochet stitch for a baby blanket, then maybe go with the half double crochet or the blanket stitch and put a lovely border on it. Thats what I did and mine came out beautiful. I say quick and yet I still spent literal months working on it.

How many chain stitches do I need to crochet a baby blanket?
The number of crochet chain stitches needed to crochet a baby blanket is going to depend on the size of crochet baby blanket you want. Do you have my free printable Crochet Blanket Sizes Chart yet? If not, enter your email below!

There are so many different sizes, even for baby blankets. All you need is something to measure with and start making that foundation chain. When it reaches the desired length, add a few more chains just for good measure, then get started.
Again, this is one of those questions you can’t answer. Your tension and my tension might not be the same. Plus, our yarn or hook sizes might be different, too.
How many balls of yarn do you need to crochet a baby blanket?
Again, this will depend on a few different factors, but the blanket I made was made with 1 and a half skeins of Bernat baby blanket yarn in sport weight with a size 4mm hook. I used half double crochet for the entire blanket and then added a few rows of half double crochet in a different color for the border.

The sport weight yarn that I used is a thinner yarn, so if you used a worsted weight yarn you might use less. The skeins that I used were also larger sized skeins. Again, so many factors to all aspects of crochet. Lion brand yarn has a table on their website to get you in the ballpark.
Just do it!
That is always my advice to anyone. If you want to do something, do it! If you want to make a baby blanket, do it. Get your yarn and your hook and just do it. It may not turn out exactly perfect, but if it is made with love, that is what counts. That is what the recipient will care about.
