Ever since I really started getting back into crochet and improving my skills, I have been wanting to give amigurumi a try. I mean who doesn’t love a cute stuffed animal? And to make my own, sign me up! I decided this free easter crochet pattern for an easter peep I kept seeing posted about in the Facebook groups was the perfect start for me.

For those of you who may not be aware, an easter peep is an easter candy. It is essentially a marshmallow candy in the shape of a bunny. They come in various colors and flavors, so you can make an easter peep in almost any color of your choosing. There is also a free easter crochet pattern for the chick version of the peep, which I haven’t tried yet.

These peeps are so cute, and they can be given as gifts or even used as photo props. You know everyone you know will be posting easter pictures all over Facebook! I posted a picture of the easter peep I made (see above) on my Facebook and so far, I have had one friend ask to order one. So, who knows, you might could sell a few in the process!

Learn Amigurumi and the Magic Circle

If you want to learn amigurumi, you are really going to need an understanding of the magic circle or magic ring. Otherwise, your amigurumi’s will have an obvious hole where the pattern starts. So, if you haven’t learned this yet, check out my blog post about it!

The magic ring is a way to crochet a circle and pull it closed so that no opening is left to start your project. In regular crochet, you can usually avoid the magic circle by simply creating a chain and joining it to the first chain creating the circle to crochet inside of, but with amigurumi, you don’t want to do that because it does leave a slight hole. You don’t want your stuffing to accidentally come out of your project!

Easter Peep – What you need

Once you have the magic circle figured out, you just need some plush yarn, a crochet hook, and some stitch markers. Now, I will admit I don’t use stitch markers, in fact, I don’t even own any, but you will not get through this project without them. TRUST ME! Since I don’t have any, I actually used paper clips as stitch markers. I do intend to invest in some, though.

Also, for this project you may need some safety eyes. I made mine without simply because I had inherited some eyes and did not realize mine did not have the corresponding backs so I could not use them. You can also opt to do your eyes with thread if you choose.

The last thing you will need is stuffing! I typically find it is cheapest at Hobby Lobby. I just got some this past week for $3.97. The same bag at Wal-Mart was over $6.

Make the Peep

To make the Easter peep you start by crocheting an ear. This is a great project to learn amigurumi because you don’t have a lot of pieces to sew together. Once you make the first ear, you tie it off, cut the yarn and make another one. After the second ear, you attach it to the first instead of cutting the yarn the second time. From here you simply start the head, then the body, then you are done!

This pattern is fun because it is it not overly difficult, doesn’t require any sewing really, and it does give you opportunities to practice your increases and decreases. All while you learn amigurumi!
