Sometimes we get bored just crocheting blankets and we decide to branch out into other areas of crochet. Crochet purses can be fun, easy, and the possibilities are endless! Today I will share with you 5 free crochet purse patterns so easy even beginners can make them!
Let’s be honest, we all have tons of purses. No one just gets one and keeps it forever. Some of use like different styles for different occasions and some of us prefer to have each of those styles in every imaginable color. That being said we are going to look at beginner friendly patterns in a variety of styles, even a crochet market bag!
When crocheting purses, you have to decide if it requires a liner or not. Currently my sewing machine is on loan to my son 250 miles away so we will focus on crochet purses you can get by without having to put a liner in.
Solid Granny Square Free Crochet Purse Patterns
A traditional granny square makes really great purses, but it is rather holey and would require a liner, so we will look at solid granny square crochet pattern. If you don’t already know how to crochet the solid granny square, here is a tutorial.
For my purse I used regular worsted weight yarn and a 4mm crochet hook. I did 10 rounds of the solid granny square. You will need 3. I chose to do mine in 3 different colors, but this is where those endless possibilities come in. You can do all the same, all different, 2 the same 1 different, whatever your heart desires!
Keep in mind, this purse was done with the solid granny square in order to avoid having to add a liner, but ANY granny square could be used to make this purse if you want to add a lining.
Easy Rectangle free crochet purse patterns
I saw a Facebook reel around the same time I saw a Pinterest pin from Traverse Bay Crochet for this type of purse, and I knew it was right up my alley. I have been working on crochet market prep and I needed a couple of quick free crochet purse patterns to try out, so this one made the list. Again, this one is VERY beginner friendly and once you make 1 and get the hang of it, you could easily dress it up with fancier stitches.
Essentially you crochet a rectangle and then strategically fold it into a purse shape. Again, the endless possibilities apply here as well. You can do it all one color, alternate colors between rows creating stripes. I even seen one where it was 2/3 one color and then 1/3 another color. This made a lovely pattern once the rectangle was folded into shape. I definitely have plans of trying that one! Here is a link to the pattern I used.
Another Granny Square Free Crochet Purse Patterns
Just to point out how truly endless the possibilities are for crochet purses, I want to share a picture of a purse I made a couple months back. I actually sold this purse at a vendor event for $40. It is on my list of things to make again, but I haven’t gotten to it yet.
I used the general starburst granny square pattern to create this “Evil Eye” themed granny square purse. The picture shows the front side of the purse. The backside I did in just the navy-blue color, but still the starburst pattern. Then I crocheted a strap that was about 5 stitches wide and used it as the strap and the connecting piece of the 2 sides.
This pattern also did not require a liner and could be recreated with any variety of color combinations. You could even do a sunflower themed granny square!
Free crochet Purse Patterns that are Round
I like to do a lot of boho type stuff, so I wanted to try out a round or semi-circle purse. I started with this pattern but ended up creating my own design instead of the bobble stitch pattern. For some reason I wasn’t happy with how it was turning out, so after the first couple of rounds I just did my own thing.
For the strap I did a few rows of single crochet, I believe. I find that if you go length wise instead of width wise on the strap, they stretch less.
Those are the patterns I enjoy. Get me started and then let me create the vision that is in my head. Here is what my finished product looked like.
I did this purse the same as the Evil Eye purse. I crocheted 2 sides, (in this case they were the same) and then used the strap piece as a strap and the piece that joins the 2 sides together. I did go a little wider with the strap on this one. Overall, I was very pleased with how it turned out.
I haven’t sold it yet, but it has gotten a lot of compliments! I have it priced at $30, currently.
