With the start of a new year approaching, everyone is asking about how to make a temperature blanket. Now I will admit, I have not jumped on this bandwagon yet, but that doesn’t stop me from telling all my readers about exactly what it is and how you can crochet a temperature blanket and I have the temperature chart for you too! For free!

What is a temperature blanket?

A temperature blanket is a blanket crocheted with colored rows corresponding to the daily temperatures of the year. Some people do them based on high temperatures, others on the low temperatures, and some even prefer to use an average temperature. It is really personal preference. The idea is to record the temperatures and then crochet a row (or ever how many you choose) on your blanket with the corresponding color you have chosen for that temperature.

How many different colors should I use?

Before starting you want to decide on your colors and what temperature, or temperature range, they will correspond to. Again, personal preference fits this part best. You can go very specific on your temperature degree, or you can do a range of several degrees per color. Keep in mind, the more specific the temperature, the more colors you will need. If you simply did a range of 5 degrees, you could still end up with more than 20 colors, depending on where you live. So, give that some consideration as well.

Color choices are also personal preference. Some people tend to do oranges and reds for the hotter temperatures and the greens and blues for the cooler temperatures. But the reality is that you can choose whatever colors you want!

Some people also choose to do weekly or monthly averages instead of days to reduce the number of rows. Keep that in mind as well. Whatever you decide to go with, you will have to map it out on a Crochet Temperature blanket Chart, see below!

What stitch is best for a temperature blanket?

The best stitch for your temperature blanket is whatever stitch you prefer. You can do the entire blanket in something as simple as a single or double crochet, or you can choose a more complex stitch. Keep in mind though, that the colors will be changing and too fancy of a stitch may not look as good with all the color changes. Sometimes, the simpler the better!

I know I am a little biased, but I could totally see an endless granny square as a temperature blanket. It would be very colorful and probably a great conversation piece! You could also do granny squares instead of rows and create temperature blocks that you put together. The possibilities really are endless.

What size should a temperature blanket be?

To determine the size of your crochet temperature blanket, first decide who it is for. Then you can decide how big or small it should be. There is really no set size, just keep in mind how many rows you will be doing for each day. You don’t want it to be 365 rows long and only 10 stitches wide!

What type of yarn should I use for my temperature blanket?

The yarn you choose to use for your temperature blanket it totally up to you. Just consider who it is for, and then choose the yarn that suits the end user best. If it will be for a baby or a child, perhaps a 100% cotton is the best choice. Also consider the end size when you are choosing your yarn. If you are going to do 365 rows, you probably don’t want a yarn that is bulky.

How do I find the temperatures?

Some people crochet them during the year they are recording temperatures for while other people pick a year from the past and use that as the temperature guide. It can be a birth year, anniversary year, any year you choose.

How do they know what the temperatures were in years past? Well, there is a website for that! Simply click here! From there you can input the area and the dates and you can get an overview of the weather on that date!

Temperature Scarf

Did you know that you can even crochet a temperature scarf? That’s right. Instead of a blanket some people opt to crochet a temperature scarf. The concept is the same, it is simply a scarf instead of a blanket. This is a good option if you are looking for a less time-consuming project.

Oftentimes people don’t quite realize just how time consuming, or big, their temperature blankets will end up being. I have seen photos of people standing on second story balconies with their temperature blankets dangling off for photos.
