Wintertime is upon us so now is a great time to find an easy crochet headband pattern free! I learned to make this ear warmer last year and I will share my own twisted front ear warmer pattern free, today, with you. I don’t want you to just follow the pattern. Here at FlamingoCrochet.com I want to teach you to understand the pattern!

This pattern is great for a beginner, it is made with only basic stitches: double crochet and half double crochet. This pattern has a bit of ribbed texture to it by crocheting in the back loop only. The ear warmer is crocheted as a rectangle, then you sew the ends together. This way you can easily adapt it to fit your head before sewing it together.

I tend to crochet most things with larger needles than needed because I like the fluffiness in stretchiness of it, so I did this twisted front ear warmer pattern using a size 6 needle. You could use whatever size hook you wanted to create the standard size which I have determined to be between 4 and 5 in wide and then the circumference of your head.

All stitches are worked in “Back Loop Only”

Ch = chain

Hdc = half double crochet

Dc = double crochet

Ch 19

Starting with 2nd chain from hook, hdc (back loops (humps) only) all the way back across. (18st)

Ch 1, hdc back across (18st) back loop only

Ch 1, hdc back across (18st) back loop only

Ch 2, dc back across (18st) back loop only

From this point on, repeat the 3-row pattern (*2 hdc rows and 1 dc row*) until you reach the desired length.

Remember to ch 1 on your hdc rows and ch 2 on your dc row. Every row should have 18 stitches.

Joining the Ends

The twist pattern of the twisted front ear warmer can be done two ways that I have found. One way is to simply fold the headband over in the middle once you’ve got it to the desired length, creating a twist. Once you have it how you like, simply stitch up the ends. This was not the method I chose to do but you could do it if you wanted to.

The method I chose to do was a little trickier, a little more tedious but it was not hard. Basically, you lay out your headband flat with the right side facing up. You take each end and fold the short sides up forming a V. Meet those two ends in the middle and interlock your V, then sew all four layers together and then flip right side out. Mine did not come out perfect but as you can see from the photos it came out fine for my first try.

If you need help with joining the ends, Sarah Maker has a good tutorial.

Customize this Pattern

The twisted front ear warmer is another pattern that could easily be customized. Essentially you are making a rectangle and then turning it into a circle. So, let’s say you wanted to use the waffle stitch, I will tell you how simple it is to adapt it. You still need the same dimensions, but you need to work your starting chain in multiples of 3 + 2 chains for the turning chain. You can choose to work it length wise or width wise, doesn’t matter.

Let’s say you choose width wise, so you crochet a multiple of 3 until you get the desired width and add the 2 chains for the turning chain. Then you can start the waffle stitch and continue until you get to the desired legnth.

This is what I mean by learning to crochet is more than just learning stitches and watching videos. You have to understand the number of stitches needed to create the desired effect. If this is what you want to learn, please join our Facebook group and let’s continue to learn together.
