You are learning to crochet, and now you are ready to crochet something bigger than all the starter crochet projects. What is the best thing for a beginner to progress to? A blanket! I am going to tell you how to crochet a blanket in 3 easy steps. It doesn’t have to be as difficult as you think. Get started today and make that blanket you didn’t even know you wanted to make.

Some people think crocheting a blanket is intimidating, and it can be. BUT it doesn’t have to be. A lot of times people make it too complicated or choose a stitch that is beyond their skill level. Start with the skill level you have and let the process of crocheting the blanket help you progress to the next level.

Most of the time your skills progress simply from doing something you haven’t done before. It doesn’t have to be complex; it just needs to be new. So don’t be afraid to try different projects. A lot of times you can learn something from even the simplest of projects.

How to Crochet a Blanket – Step 1

The first step to crocheting a blanket is to decide what kind of blanket you want to crochet so you know the proper blanket size. There are SO MANY choices on blanket sizes! Crochet blankets can range from the size of a “lovey” which is 12 inches by 12 inches, to a California king size crochet blanket at 104 inches by 108 inches.

If you don’t have a preference, perhaps start with a small 14 x 16 baby blanket size just to get your feet wet. If you don’t know someone who needs a baby blanket, perhaps donate it! Ok, now you know what size crochet blanket you want to make, let’s move on to the next step!

How to Crochet a Blanket – Step 2

The second step is to choose a color for you crochet blanket. Again, endless choices here. We can narrow this down though using the type of blanket you have chosen. Let’s start with a few of the most common blanket types.

If you are going to crochet a baby blanket, then perhaps you want it to be for a specific gender. You could do pinks and purples for a girl, blues or greens for boys, or if you want gender neutral you can do yellows.

Maybe you want to make a lapghan for someone special. Start by looking at their favorite colors. If nothing there strikes your fancy, then perhaps go with a neutral color like blues or grays. I would not go too flashy, especially if it is for an older person.

What about a twin-size blanket for a special kid in your life? Maybe use their bedroom colors, or the colors from their favorite cartoon characters.

The blanket pictured above is one of many “bucket-list” projects for me. It is the virus stitch blanket and as you can see it is only slightly larger than a placemat. Like I said, we are getting our feet wet here. I got my feet wet with the virus stitch. I learned it and I worked on it until my skein ran out. (It did have one more color change after this picture was taken) It is BEAUTIFUL! And like so many other crocheters out there, it is currently in my “unfinished” stack. 🙂

How to Crochet a Blanket – Step 3

The third step in crocheting a blanket is to decide which stitch or motif you would like to use. Again, there are SO MANY! Let’s narrow it down a little here. If you are a beginner and this is your first blanket, you are going to want to choose something that will be easy enough for you to do without getting frustrated. In the case of a beginner, I would recommend either single crochet or double crochet. Double crochet will work up a little faster since it is a taller stitch.

Perhaps you are a little past the beginner stage, in that case I would recommend something like the waffle stitch. It creates a lovely texture but is not overly difficult. Other considerations would be a motif, perhaps a granny square or virus stitch (pictured above).

Other things to consider

The last 2 things I will throw out there for consideration are yarn type and hook size. As with the color and size, these can be chosen based on the blanket you chose to do. Whichever type of yarn you choose, I would use the recommended hook size for that yarn. Easy Peasy!

So there you have it, how to crochet a blanket in 3 easy steps. If you find you enjoyed crocheting the blanket, do look into donating it somewhere. Even your local hospitals, churches, or nursing homes are great options for donations!
