This post will cover the 2 easy ways to join granny squares together for beginners. So many new crocheters are fascinated with the granny square, and rightly so! There are endless possibilities to what you can create with crochet granny squares. However, unless you are doing a continuous granny square, you will eventually need to know how to join granny squares together. This can be a very daunting task, especially if you have never had to join granny squares.

With all the granny squares I have made over the years; I have only ever had to join granny squares once and that was for the granny square cushion cover I made recently. Like most people, I had no idea what I was doing, but I managed to figure it out. You can see my granny square join in the photo below.

Since joining granny squares was completely new to me, I chose to do it the simplest way I could find. What I ended up doing without even watching any videos or reading too much was simply to join the granny squares with a slip stitch.

Slip Stitch Join

So, the first of the two easy ways to join granny squares is the slip stitch join. This is the method I used in the above photo when I made my granny square pillow cover. The slip stitch join is exactly what it sounds like. You run a slip stitch across the sides of the square you are joining.

I like this method as it leaves a smooth seam that essentially blends right in. Of course, in the photo above I used a different color yarn, so my seam stands out color wise, but texture wise it is smooth.

When joining my pillow cover squares, I kept my working yarn between the squares instead of off to one side or the other. I am not sure if this would have been the correct way to do this or not, but it seemed to make it easier as far as tangles and keeping my stitches on the same stitch on each granny square panel.

Single Crochet Join

The second of the easy ways to join granny squares is the method seen in the video below is the single crochet method. I have included a video from BellaCoCo as she is HIGHLY recommended when it comes to tutorials.

This method is also exactly as it sounds, you simply crochet a row of single crochets on the side of the square you are joining. The only drawback to this method as far as my opinion goes, is that it stands out a bit texture wise.

Which method is best?

Choosing which method is best will depend on a few factors. First, which is easiest for you? Second, which works best with your current crochet project? What works well for one project may not work well for another just as what is easiest for you might not be easiest for me.

Final tips

There are a lot of different ways to join granny squares together, so don’t feel pressured to use the same method as someone else. Just because one method works for someone else doesn’t mean it will work for you. Figure out which method you like best and use it.

I suggested the two methods above as they are easiest for beginners. As your skills progress, you can learn to join granny squares a variety of ways.

Take your time when joining granny squares together. The more time you take with the joining, the better the outcome will be!
